What is chiropractic?
Chiropractors are specialists in treating musculoskeletal complaints, especially spine-related conditions, and the primary tool a chiropractor uses is called "spinal manipulation" (aka "chiropractic adjustments").
The reasoning behind the focus on the spine and spinal manipulation is this: alignment and movement of the vetebrae can become restricted due to a variety of reasons (ie. motor vehicle collision, poor posture, repetitive stress, injuries), and this dysfunction at the vertebral level can irritate the nerve exiting the spinal column, resulting in:
-
local pain
-
stiffness
-
tightness in the muscles surrounding the dysfunctional spinal segment
-
abnormal sensations (numbness, tingling, coldness, pins and needles)
-
Pain traveling down the nerve distribution (ie. into the legs or arms)
-
Change in reflexes or muscle weakness (in more severe cases)
Doctors of chiropractic examine the patient's spine and surrounding musculature for abnormal patterns. If misalignment or restriction is found, spinal manipulation is then indicated to restore the alignment or motion in the problematic spinal unit.
Spinal manipulation typically involves a precise, quick thrust to the dysfunctional parts of the spine. However, there are alternative techniques to the typical spinal manipulation, such as Cox Flexion-Distraction, Activator and drop table adjusting, which is employed based on specific patient condition and preference. You can find specific information on these gentle but effective techniques on our services page.
In addition to spinal manipulation, a Chiropractor may apply adjunctive therapies to reduce nerve irritation and inflammation, and decrease muscle spasm. Some of the adjunctive therapies used in the practice include hot/cold therapy, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and mechanical traction.
A Natural, holistic solution
Chiropractic has been synonymous with "adjustments" by the public. While it is true that the primary treatment technique involves spinal manipulation, Chiropractic is much more than that, because of the natural and holistic philosophy of chiropractors.
A Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), or Chiropractor, definitely fits the description of a "Doctor of the future" by Mr. Thomas Edison. Chiropractic is not a technique, but a profession focused on the normal functioning of the musculoskeletal system (human frame), and in the maintenance of musculoskeletal health (diet/nutrition, exercise) in order to prevent recurrence of musculoskeletal complaint. The table below demonstrates what preventive/wellness procedures a chiropractor typically practices:
What that means is, once your condition is improving, we will show you:
-
Exercises to strengthen the area and prevent complaint recurrence
-
Nutritional recommendations for healthy disc and bones
-
Weight management to reduce likelihood of back pain
-
Relaxation and stress management techniques
